There are a number of ways to arrive at your next Timbavati safari. Whether you’re looking to drive to the Timbavati, fly in to the charming Hoedspruit Airport, or charter your own private plane, we’ve outlined a small guide for getting to Kings Camp. Take a look at the best options for getting to Kings Camp below.
By Air
Located in a private reserve on the border of Kruger National Park, Kings Camp has access to facilities that service one of Southern Africa’s most popular safari destinations. There are three major airports serving the Timbavati – Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport, Phalaborwa Airport and Kruger Mpumalanga International.
Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit
Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit is the nearest airport to Kings Camp and receives commercial regional flights. South African Airlines Express and CEMAir fly in from Johannesburg and Cape Town daily, as do private charter flights. Hoedspruit is a 40 minute road transfer to Kings Camp which can be taken care of by our friendly Seasons in Africa transfer service.
Phalaborwa Airport
Phalaborwa Airport connects with direct flights from Johannesburg and is an hour and a half away from Kings Camp by road. The airport is roughly 2 kilometres from the National Park gate, making it a popular option with visitors combining a trip to Kruger and the Timbavati. Flight details can be found online.
Kruger Mpumalanga International
Kruger Mpumalanga International (KMI) Airport in Nelspruit is 190km and roughly a three hour drive from Kings Camp. KMI receives flights from Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and Livingstone, making it ideal for visitors travelling to more than one destination in Southern Africa.
If you prefer, it is even more convenient to charter your own private aircraft to fly directly to the lodge or to nearby Hoedspruit Airport. Kings Camp has a private landing strip and helipad a short distance from the lodge for ease of access. Should private charters be necessary for your travel time, please contact reservations who can assist with flight options.
By Road
The road network in South Africa is of a very high standard in comparison to other African countries. It is modern, regularly maintained, well-marked and sign posted. It is hard-surfaced until a short distance from Kings Camp. Once you cross the Klaserie River and sign in at the Timbavati Control Gate, you will be travelling on a tar sealed road. Regular sedan cars can easily reach Kings Camp.
From Johannesburg
Kings Camp is approximately 500km or 6 hours from Johannesburg by car. The drive takes you through the beautiful and scenic Abel Erasmus Pass before dropping down the escarpment into the lowveld bush.
From Nelspruit
If you choose to fly into Nelspruit, you can opt to transfer to Kings with one of our private shuttles or by hiring your own car. The drive is approximately 3 hours or 190km and the road is generally very good and safe to travel on.
